Description:
Rick first started playing guitar back when he was 8, cutting his teeth on everything from Flatt and Scruggs to The Beatles. Although he was born and raised in Cincinnati, he spent many a weekend at his parents’ homeplace in Jackson County, Kentucky, steeped in the traditions of country and bluegrass. Although he did his time with a few rock bands during his teen years and twenties, Rick found himself drawn back to bluegrass in the 90’s. After playing a short time with the regional bands Blue & Lonesome and Blue Creek, Rick joined The Gibson Brothers in 2005 and has been playing mandolin with this nationally acclaimed band ever since. He recently recorded with them on the newly released “Iron & Diamonds” CD, which debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Chart and is gathering rave reviews. When Rick’s not on the road, he still emerses himself in music with his professional recording studio (Hayes Productions), and by making Loar-styled F-5 mandolins (aptley named Hayes Mandolins). In the studio, Rick enjoys working with those new to recording to help capture their best performance, as well as those who need no help -- JD Crowe, Clay Hess, Ron Stewart, Jim VanCleve and Dwight McCall to name a few. While at the luthier table, Rick builds mandolins from a player’s perspective; uniting rich tone, ease of play, and handcrafted artistry into every instrument. Rick has just released his first solo bluegrass CD, entitled “Fly By Night.” Rick plays mandolin, guitar and bass on the project and invited Ron Stewart, Jim VanCleve, Josh Swift, Dwight McCall, Eric Gibson, Leigh Gibson, Clay Hess and his dad, Green Hayes to join him. Rick continues to live in Cincinnati with his wife Lyn, their dog Blue, and their children living nearby.
